In 1996 the maiden flight of Bombardier's ultra-long range, high speed, and high capacity corporate jet was called the Bombardier Global. This new jet among aircraft for sale was designed to compete with the Airbus Corporate Jet, Boeing Business Jet and the Gulfstream V. The Bombardier Global can fly between any two points on the globe (thus the name Global) and has to stop only once to refuel. With a range of 6700 nautical miles the Global has the ability to fly nonstop between intercontinental destinations such as Sydney/Los Angeles, New York/Tokyo and Taipei/Chicago.
The Bombardier Global jet for sale was created with the help of external supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and three of Bombardier's co-operating subsidiaries: Canadair, Shorts Belfast and de Havilland. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries builds the wing and center fuselage sections. Canadair is the design leader and solely responsible for the Global's nose. Shorts Belfast is responsible for the design and manufacture of the engine nacelles, horizontal stabilizer and forward fuselage. The rear fuselage and vertical tail as well as the final assembly are done by de Havilland.
The Bombardier Global is powered by BMW Rolls Royce BR-710s engines with FADEC to produce a cruising speed of .85 mach. A military version of the Global called the Sentinel R1 was also produced. In 2006 Bombardier created an improved version for aircraft sales called the Global Express XRS. The XRS has a cruising speed of .89 Mach and a longer range of 5325 nautical miles due to the addition of a 1486 lb. fuel tank at the wing root.
