Design began on an improved version of Dassault's Falcon 20/200 in 1976. It was called the Falcon 50 for aircraft sales purposes. The first one was delivered in 1979. By the time the Falcon 50 was built to reach its range requirements of 3475 nm, it was a completely new aircraft rather than an updated Falcon 20, which was the design basis to create its long-range transatlantic and transcontinental aircraft. The Falcon 50 does maintain the Falcon 20's nose and fuselage cross section.
The Falcon 50 is powered by three Garrett TFE731 turbofan engines to produce a cruising speed of 475 knots. The new supercritical wing is of greater area than the previous Falcon 20.
In 1996 an updated, long-range version of the Falcon 50 began production, under the name Falcon 50EX, to enhance the company's position in the aircraft for sales market. The 50EX was powered by three TFE73140 turbofan engines to provide more fuel efficiency and a 400 nm increase in range. A new EFIS flight deck and Collins Pro Line 4 avionics were used.
The Falcon 50 remains in production today with more than 275 having been produced.
A used Dassault Falcon 50 or used Falcon 50E for sale is best sought out by a qualified broker familiar with the differences.
