Mooney Aircraft was founded by famous aircraft designer Al Mooney. In 1948 Mooney Aircraft produced a single-seat, retractable gear, all wood aircraft called the M-18, later renamed the Mooney Mite for aircraft sales.
In 1953 came the M-20, a four-seat, high performance light aircraft for sale. The M-20's frame consisted of both metal and wood and then was covered in fabric. The Mooney M-20 still used retractable landing gear like the M-18 but now featured a distinct forward sweeping tail design. A Continental O-300 engine producing 145 h.p. was used in the M-20 but later replaced by the Lycoming O-320 to produce 150 h.p.
Many variations of the M-20 ranging from the M-ANA to the M-GAG exist for aircraft sales. The M-20 line offers from 145 to 200 horsepower engines and ranges in cruising speed from less than 147 knots to 163 knots. From the mid-1950 to the mid-1970's over 5,000 M-20's were built.
Today Mooney Aircraft produces three, single engine aircrafts: the Ovation 2 GX, Ovation 3, and the Acclaim. The Mooney Acclaim is the fastest single engine aircraft produced. The current Mooney models range in cruise speeds from 190 ktas to a record 237 ktas. Every new Mooney comes standard equipped with the Garmin G1000 avionics system.
