Piper Aircraft Company decided to produce a Cheyenne family of turboprop corporate aircraft based upon its extremely popular Navajo and Navajo chieftain piston twins created in the 1950's. Many production setbacks occurred. The prototype would not fly until 1969.
For this aircraft to work, but retain design characteristics of other Piper Aircraft, extensive engineering and testing became necessary. Turboprops instead of piston engines were used to increase speed. But this necessitated redesigning flight controls to handle the increased airframe load factor. An unexpected flood also occurred at is main production plant in Lock Haven and set production back.
The Cheyenne's certification was finally granted by the FAA almost three years later, in 1972. The original aircraft for sale produced was the Cheyenne I. It was tweaked to produce more altitude power using a revised interior and cowlings, and renamed Cheyenne 1A. Next comes the Cheyenne II, which years later became a stretch version, named the Cheyenne IIXL. The XL ran two feet longer, and held an extra cabin window.
The Piper Cheyenne is considered an amazing aircraft. It out climbs and outperforms many competitive turbine aircraft sales such as the King Air. This high performer also belongs to one of the globe's longest existing aircraft firms, Piper, meaning service and maintenance never are an issue.
