The Piper Pacer first flew during the post WWII period as a four-place, tail-wheel aircraft. Pacer is a high wing aircraft featuring classic aluminum framing covered with fabric. The Pacer originally rolled out of the factory equipped with 125 h.p., 135 h.p. or 150 h.p. engines but today many are equipped with aftermarket conversions of 160 h.p. and 180 h.p. engines for the advanced aircraft sales market.
The Piper Pacer received a nose-wheel for easier landings in 1953 and was renamed the Piper Tri-Pacer. Between 1953 and 1960, more than 8,000 of these popular Tri-Pacers were produced as aircraft for sale. The Tri-Pacer came standard with a more powerful 150 h.p. or 160 h.p. engine. The Tri-Pacer comes with maximum 142 mph speed and a range of 540 miles.
A number of owners converted their Tri-Pacers from nose-wheel to tail-wheel configuration. These converted Tri-Pacers offer the original tail-dragger feel of the Pacer. These conversion Pipers are often referred to as PA-22/20s.
From 1961 to 1964 Piper Aircraft produced a trainer version of its popular Tri-Pacer. It was dubbed the Piper Colt. The Colt uses a typical trainer aircraft for sale design of side-by-side seating but uses wheel controls compared to other trainers which use stick controls. The Colt trainer features a reduced 108 horsepower Lycoming O-235 engine, single fuel tank, and lacks flaps.
