An affordable trainer aircraft in bright yellow rolled off Piper Aircraft's production line between 1934 and 1947. Called the Piper Cub, it remains one of the most popular aircrafts of all time. After a troubled start, it soared to become the all-time leader.
C.G. Taylor designed the original aircraft for sale, and named it after himself: the Taylor E2. When his company (Taylor Brother Aircraft Company) went bankrupt, entrepreneur and businessman William Piper bought the rights. This aircraft for sale was equipped with an engine producing 20 h.p. Piper's first move involved replacing the engine with a Continental A-40 37 h.p. engine, almost double the power. A total of 342 Taylor E-2 Cubs were built.
Walter Jamouneau changed the E-2 Cub in 1935 by adding innovations like a revised tail shape and wider undercarriage. This new update was named the J-2 Cub. The Cub was improved upon again to become the J-3 Cub, and these improvements immediately shot it up to become a sales leader among aircraft sales. Later, a J-4 Coupe Cub with side-by-side seating, and a three seat Cub named the J-5 Cub Cruiser, were built. Once the U.S. entered WWII, all Cubs then built went to the military.
After WWII, Piper Aircraft created the J-5 Cub Cruiser by adding a more powerful Lycomings O-235 engine, and named it the PA-12 Super Cruiser. A total of 3,759 Super Cruisers were built.
