In 1923, Igor Sikorsky founded an American aircraft and helicopter manufacturer. In the 1940's, he engineered the first stable, single rotor, controllable helicopter that went into large scale production. Helicopters today are still based on the original design of Igor Sikorsky. Sikorsky remains a leading helicopter name today, for both military and civilian aircraft sales. Since 1957, the President of the United States has had a Sikorsky built helicopter. Schweizer Aircraft Corporation is now a subsidiary of Sikorsky, complementing each other with the production of small helicopters by Schweizer and the larger helicopters of Sikorsky. With little overlap, the two firms can concentrate on manufacturing a broad range of helicopters to fit everyone's needs among aircraft for sale.
