Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Westwind aircraft began life as Aero Commander's Jet Commander in 1963. Shortly after production began in 1965 Aero Commander Aircraft for sale production rights were purchased by North American Rockwell. But NAR could not produce the Jet Commander outright is of no use to NAR, since it already had a business jet for sale in their product line, and anti-trust laws prohibited NAR from owning two designs.
In 1968 Israel Aircraft purchased the rights to the Jet Commander and produced 150 for aircraft sales before modifying the design and renaming it the Westwind. It stretched the fuselage, added fuel tanks to the wings and replaced the turbojet engines with two Garrett TFE7311100G turbofan engines. The Westwind has a cruising speed of 390 knots and a range of 2,390 nm. IAI Westwinds are designed for 7 passengers but can accommodate up to ten.
In 1976 the Israeli Air Force used a version of the Westwind called the IAI Sea Scan for maritime patrol.
In 1980 an improved version of the Westwind called Westwind II replaced the original. Westwind II featured a new wing centre-section and the use of winglets as well as an upgraded interior. Production of the Westwind line ended in 1987 with a total of 244 being built.
